connect_with_one_another

接続中, which translates to “connecting”, is exactly what this album is about. Whether it be connecting with old or new friends, connecting with a lover, or just connecting with yourself. This album is about keeping in touch with the people around you and connecting yourself with reality.

“create_new_i-be_profile” was the first song completed for the album. The title pays homage to one of my favourite filmmakers, Ryan Trecartin. ‘I-be Area’ is such a wild and interesting movie that has this proto-vaporwave aesthetic that I think fans of this genre would enjoy. A sample of his work will show up later in the album as well!
Now onto the song itself… I was inspired to create this track after hearing “数学” by Macintosh Plus. The way they incorporate the saxophone sample over a completely different song was so inspiring to me, so I decided to try my own take at that. The main sample used in this song is “I Wanna Make Love To You” by Yours Truly, and the saxophone sample that pops up throughout is “Feels So Good” by Chuck Mangione. The latter is one of my all time favourite jazz songs. So when it came to choosing a saxophone instrumental I knew exactly where to pull from!

“stronger_with_friends” is another unique song on the album. I was inspired to create it because Metric is playing a show here in Calgary later this year and so I decided to dive deeper into their discography. I found the song “Clone” and thought it would be cool to vaporize, so I did! The chaotic sample you hear in the middle is audio from a short film called “junior war, 2013” by, you guessed it, Ryan Trecartin. This is the second time I’ve sampled this film for a song, the first being on the track “my love 2013” from the album “things are quieter now”.

The theme of connection for this album was inspired by the album art itself. After listening through the some of the songs I quickly realized this album is definitely a late night drive type album, or taking a walk under a low hanging sun type album. The cover I had initially made for the album didn’t really match the vibe of the album so I had scrapped it and started over. After scrolling around the net for a few days I found this incredible picture of some sort of y2k era video game that reminded me of an old tony hawk game from my childhood. Hawaii from THUG to be exact. The picture, that you are now familiar with, had digital palm trees backed by a beautiful palette of pink and orange—the perfect aesthetic for the album. It just needed a lil something extra and the cover was done! Because my mind had temporarily stumbled down the tony hawks video game series rabbit hole, I thought of something that might be the perfect thing to accompany the backdrop… The cellphone from THAW! It matched the cover so well and after adding the album title to the phone, the album cover was now complete!

The rest of the album was completed soon after the cover was done. The finishing touch was adding the voicemail sample to the start of the last track “i’m_the_1_4_u”. For the longest time I couldn’t figure out how to close out the album, but adding that little cherry on top was the final piece of the puzzle sliding into place. This album was a blast to make and I hope it’s just as fun of a listen! And thank you :)

Bonus facts:
- The words in the titles are all connected via underscores to further drive home the theme of connection
- the sample used in “telecommunication_system” is from a hotels.com ad. It kept popping up when I was looking for samples on YouTube and I got annoyed by it. Buuuut it kinda matched the vibe and because I heard it so damn much it became an ear worm and so I ended up using it!

There’s some good music here but to me it’s ruined by the mall background noise. I was born in the early 80’s so yes I’m also nostalgic about malls. My high school was in a mall. Lol seriously it was, but I don’t really want to hear it throughout a whole album. Dionysus Virus

I really enjoyed this album that felt synthwavey in some moments but to me sounds like sample free vaporwave. I wanted to listen to music but just got over a headache so this chill subdued style was perfect. Nothing too bright, just right. Dionysus Virus
